This system is meant to be used on a needs only basis, but the cost requirements for the upgrades is quite low, and the amount of essence you get is exceedingly high, so there is no reason you don’t dump all of your points into each station.Ĭyber Shadow is not a particularly long game, clocking in at the roughly 10-12 hours mark as any more than that and it would take away much of the charm and test the patience of the player significantly more. These are locked in and cannot be chosen, but are geared towards giving you the resources you need, and nothing else, if a level has far away enemies, you can unlock a katana ability to hit for further away. When you gain essence, you can buy certain unlocks and abilities at the checkpoint stations that help you progress to the next checkpoint depending on where you are. ![]() However, this is slightly balanced with an interesting mechanic of Essence gained from killing enemies. I found myself dying near a checkpoint, only to die and be sent back what feels like an eternity in the level. Placement of where Shadow is and knowing what ahead greatly helps you not get yourself killed dozens of times, where the slightest misstep can get you insta-killed on the spot, forcing you back to your most recent save.Ĭyber Shadow ’s level design is something that needs some work, saves and checkpoints are exceedingly far and few in between, and while there is no life system, the game is more than a few times disjointed in where they are placed. The game Cyber Shadow reminds me of most is one of my favorite series of all times, the Megaman Zero franchise, with both Zero and Shadow specializing in close-ranged sword attacks mixed with some range and mobility options.īeing experienced in that franchise gave me a higher skill knowledge while playing Cyber Shadow as the gameplay ranges from occasionally easy to absolute bullet hell nightmare mode, even on normal difficulty, Cyber Shadow kicked my butt more than a few times for me to be salty. ![]() Shadow starts with a simple jump and basic katana, with each successful level granting you new powers and abilities. This mix of art style, musical design, and innovation to the genre give Cyber Shadow an overall well-built cohesive experience.Ĭyber Shadow’s gameplay is where the game truly shines, it is both incredibly frustrating but satisfyingly rewarding. The game drips style and substance, between weapons, enemy types, and models character animations, Cyber Shadow delivers on excellent worldbuilding. While graphically Cyber Shadow isn’t making strides, from a technical standpoint I was impressed with how much it has taken such a classic archetype and evolved it with modern level design and atmosphere. His quest to save his clan and the ones he loves are juxtaposed by the characters all having differing views on who the man in the robot suit is, allowing you to question his motives at the same time.Ĭyber Shadow has an incredible soundtrack that matches both a futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic and an 8-bit style that is both catchy and repetitive enough to stick in your head while you play. While Cyber Shadow doesn’t ask if Shadow is “more machine than man”, it makes it clear that his story is a tragic one. The game has a distinct cyberpunk design and aesthetic, with many of the enemies you face being cyberized monstrosities, even Shadow himself while not directly questioning his existence is a unique foil to the threats you encounter. While the plot and story aren’t initially too intriguing, and I wish more was done on that part, Cyber Shadow has many secrets in its levels that shed more light on why Shadow has undergone cyber ninja training and how he finds himself in such a bleak future. Join us today for our review of Cyber Shadow to see if you have what it takes to make it through this bullet shooter hell.Ĭyber Shadow opens with protagonist Shadow being awakened by a mysterious robot, informing him that he’s being taken out of recovery early and being told his clan is in danger and he’s the only cyber ninja warrior that can turn the tide. As a veteran of these titles, and some of the earliest games I’ve ever played, Cyber Shadow was a refreshing breath of fresh air and a call back to what made those games popular, with a modern technological advancement. Cyber Shadow is a Metroidvania side-scrolling action platformer with strong elements inspired by classic games of Contra and the original Ninja Gaiden.
